I discovered that a table rather than a chair was better to position my body in relationship with a patient’s for controlling my fingers and viewing in the mouth. It became evident to me after learning to work in this way that this was the reason the surgeries at the hospital were being performed on a level surface. Surgeons position their patients for the best control of their fingers.
It just happens that a horizontal patient is more relaxed and has the full force of gravity to keep him or her in position. This improves safety, minimizes distractions, and makes for a more relaxed dental visit….for everyone. I also found that working with patients on a level surface made it easier to treat handicapped patients in wheelchairs, to transfer hospitalized patients from a gurney, and to position pregnant women and recent back surgery patients for dental procedures lying on their side. I think that humans relate best to level surfaces. They tend to be more unsure and unstable on tilting or tilted surfaces, such as occurs with being moved backward in traditional dental chairs. Since people don’t have eyes in the back of their heads, most of us simply don't like having someone tilt us backwards. |
